Dinner Talk: To Will or Not to Will?

“How inappropriate! Such morbid issues should be discussed only when I am about to go. Moreover, it is for the rich who have much to give away. With my humble assets, I am happy to leave it to the law to decide how it should be distributed.” Can this hold true beyond our last day? Is this our true desire or pure ignorance? Do we have enough to leave behind to begin with? Have we fully understood the implications of it all to our family and loved ones?

• What exactly is Estate planning? Why plan? How to plan?
• I don’t even remember off-hand all the assets I have and my documents are all over. How does this affect my family? Are my family members capable of managing my estate in an efficient manner?
• What are the various payments to be incurred on death? Will I leave behind sufficient resources for my family after making these payments?
• What happens to my young children if both my spouse and I were to meet with a common accident?
• What if I do not have a Will? What does the law say if I do not have a Will? Will this really meet my objectives?
• What I can and cannot distribute via a Will?
• CPF / CPF investment / Insurance Polices etc - How to ensure its efficiency?
